There are numerous of reasons to acquire an electric bike, commonly known as an e-bike. They can help you bike more and drive less, travel further faster, and they’re just a heck of a lot of fun!

OVERVIEW

But there are soooo many electric bikes hitting the market, it can be hard to know what to look for or where to begin. And as a woman, you could have particular factors to take into account. Like requiring a smaller bike, wishing to wear a skirt, or just hoped for a lovely design.
The good news is that we’ve sorted through the many possibilities for you. We’ve tested, reviewed, surveyed, and researched electric bikes, to come up with our top selections for women’s electric bikes.

Some of these are truly women’s-specific bikes while others are merely bikes that have a wide choice of sizes and proper geometry for ladies. We should also emphasize that we’ve focused here on bikes that are ideal for casual and/or city riding.
These selections are perfect for biking to work, running errands, cruising the bike path, general exercise, or towing kids. (If you’re more interested in cycling a century or ripping singletrack, stay tuned–we’re working on testing and reviewing e-road and e-mountain bikes for y’all too)!
If you’re entirely new to e-bikes, you might also want to scroll all the way to the bottom of the post. There we’ve offered some recommendations on what to look for–types of motors, batteries, etc.

BUYING GUIDE

Things To Think About When Shopping For A Women’s Electric Bike

Classes of E-Bikes

There are three different “classes” of electric bikes. Class 1 and Class 3 e-bikes can also be referred to as “pedal assist” bikes. This is because they still require you to pedal to propel forward.

Class 1 e-bikes can propel you up to 20 mph. They can have a throttle, but the throttle will not engage unless you are actively pedaling.

Class 2 e-bikes also have 20mph maximum, but may have a throttle that works without you having to pedal. This can be super helpful for getting started from a stop, especially if the bike is heavier or is hauling cargo.

Class 3 e-bikes go the fastest and can go up to 28 mph. These may or may not have a throttle, but the throttle will not engage unless you’re pedaling.

All 3 classes are allowed in most cities and states without any kind of special license, but laws and regulations vary by state and municipality, so you may want to check before choosing a bike. Also be aware that in many areas, electric mountain bikes are not allowed on the trails at all–regardless of class.

All classes of e-bikes have a maximum motor power of 750w. Which brings us to our next point….

The Motor

There are just a few of reliable manufacturers for e-bike motors. Bosch, Yamaha, Shimano, Brose, and Bafang are some of the most popular examples.

These "name brand" motors are tried and true, and they come with solid guarantees and support. Off-brand motors can be found on cheaper e-bikes, and some of these bikes operate rather well. However, whenever you purchase a vehicle that is not a major brand, you are always taking a risk. It's important to check out customer feedback before making a purchase.

Motor torque is measured in newton-meters, and motor power is measured in watts. You can roughly estimate the bump you'll receive by using either number. More power is indicated by a higher wattage and larger number of nanometers.

Motors for electric bicycles can either be "mid-drive" or "hub-drive." As the name implies, a mid-drive motor is installed in the middle of the bike, between the cranks and the bottom bracket. The motor for a hub-drive bicycle is housed in the hub (the center) of the wheel.

500w hub drive motor

We generally prefer a mid-drive motor, although there are benefits to a hub-drive. Hub-drive motors are more affordable and require less maintenance which can be attractive to women just getting into cycling. Mid-drive motors offers a smoother experience, while hub-drive motors can be a bit jerky. (Some are better than other).

The Battery

A lot of people put a lot of focus on the engine when they are shopping for an electric bicycle, but they don't put nearly as much emphasis on the battery. The watt-hour is a measurement that is even more significant than the watt (or Wh). This gives you an estimate of how much power you will receive and for how long. The greater the Wh capacity of your battery, the longer you will be able to ride before needing to recharge it.

You should also take into consideration how long it will take the battery to be recharged. The majority of electric bicycles need you to connect a charger directly to the battery while it is still attached to the bike. Some models enable you to remove the battery so that it can be charged in a different environment. I'm a big supporter of chargers and batteries that have some kind of indication light to let you know when they're fully charged. This is especially useful for batteries.

The visibility of the battery is something else that you might want to consider paying attention to. While some bicycles have a large and cumbersome battery that is mounted to the down-tube of the frame, others have become more sleek and are almost undetectable. Whether or not this is relevant to you is a decision that is entirely up to you to make.

Weight

A motor and battery can add a significant amount of weight to an electric bicycle when compared to the weight of a standard bicycle. Although you might not be as aware of the weight while pedaling because of the electric assist, it might still make the bike more difficult to manoeuvre, place on your bike rack, or carry upstairs. When going shopping, it is especially important for ladies who are on the shorter side to pay attention to weight.

Frame Design (Step-Thru)

If you are choosing an electric bike for commuting, you may want to consider a step-thru frame. These frames have the top bar (or top tube) slope lower, and are often referred to as a women’s frame.

These lower step-thru frames make it easier for shorter women to get on and off the bike. They also allow you to wear a skirt if you so choose.

Ability To Carry Gear

What are you planning to bring (if anything) with you wherever you go? A container for water? Check to see if the bike you desire has a place to mount a water bottle.

Your computer and the supplies you need for work? Find a bike that already has a rack on the back so you can attach paniers to it.

What about the children, the dogs, and the groceries? Your best bet will be to get an electric cargo bike that either has a large storage compartment up front or in the back.

Online Vs Your Local Bike Shop

In the past few years, there has been a significant increase in the number of direct sales of e-bikes to individual customers. In other words, as opposed to purchasing them from a local bike store, you will purchase them online and have them delivered to your residence.

This has both positive and negative repercussions for us. Because there is no longer a need for a middleman to be involved in the transaction, you are typically able to get a better deal as a result of this. In addition to this, it gives you access to a wider assortment of products than you would typically find at your neighborhood bike shop.

On the other hand, when you shop at a bike store that is local to you, you will typically receive superior support (and you support your local economy). In the event that something were to occur to your bicycle, you could always bring it back to that shop to have it repaired. If you are not particularly mechanically aware (or if you do not have a spouse or friend who is), it may be in your best interest to buy anything from a shop rather than attempting to fix it yourself. It also means that there is typically some degree of quality control, which is not something you receive when you place an order online.

Having said all of that, I have several electric bicycles that are sold directly to customers (like my RadPower), and I've had a lot of success shopping online for them. Therefore, it is up to the individual.

E Bikes for Women FAQs

What is the best electric bike for a woman?

We think each and every one of the bikes on our list is excellent choices for women riders, but if we had to choose just one we’d go with the top pick. The Liv Thrive E+ 1 Pro can go more than 70 miles on a single charge and includes durable tires for off-road applications.

What is the most powerful electric bike?

This depends on what you are going to use it for. A bike’s motor is usually measured by its motor, but motors are designed to excel at a variety of different functions. Some truly powerful motors are fantastic at climbing steep inclines but still feature relatively low maximum speeds. Make sure to prioritize as you shop.

How do I choose an electric bike?

First, take a look at the motor and make sure it offers a smooth ride over different terrain types. Then look at the battery to ensure a decent maximum range. Finally, look over the safety features and the additional functionalities on offer.

Who are the best manufacturers of e bikes for women?

We made sure to populate the above list with bikes made by reputable manufacturers, such as Liv and Blix Bikes. Other great companies that nearly made our list include Brose and Powertube.
